Ohio Department of Natural Resources manages the harvesting of Wild American Ginseng.
Wildcrafters beware of the strict laws enforced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. You must get permission to dig ginseng from private or state property. You must not start digging until September 1, 2009 through December 31 2009. The ginseng plants you dig must have three prongs and be several years old. The red berries on top of the plant must be planted in the same area the ginseng was taken.
Wild American Ginseng
Panax Quinquefolius

Common names:Sang, Manroot, Five fingers

Ginseng is a perennial plant that grows up to 2' when mature.

Preparing your Ginseng for Market
Ginseng roots must be washed by rubbing gently with your finger tips in clean water. Roots should be layed on a screen and dried with proper air circulation, drying slowly out of direct sunlight. When the roots are thoroughly dried, store them in a paper sack, so that they will not mold. Make sure stored roots are not subject to high humidity. Be careful not to break the roots, and leave the dried neck (the part of the previous years stem)in tact.

Finding A Market for Herbs
There are only a few large ginseng buyers left in the United States. Small buyers are becoming less available. If you cannot find other buyers on the internet, you can call the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and they may have a list of dealers.
